Chairman of the Russian Olympic Committee (ROC) Stanislav Pozdnyakov confirmed that Russian athletes will not take part in the Asian Games. He clarified that the Russians will not be able to compete due to the decision of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
“The IOC did not allow Russian athletes to take part in the Asian Games. There is absolutely no hope. The games begin on September 23, neither we nor the Belarusians received an invitation,” said Mr. Pozdnyakov (quoted from “RIA News”).
He clarified that last December the idea of allowing athletes from the Russian Federation and Belarus to compete at the Asian Games in a neutral status was supported at the Olympic summit in Lausanne. However, no official decisions that would allow Russians to participate in the tournament (including invitations to the Games for specific federations and athletes) were ultimately made over the following months.
September 1 in the Asian Olympic Committee publication The Indian Express reported that the IOC refused to allow Russian athletes to participate in the Asian Games. According to the committee, the participation of athletes from the Russian Federation in the competition was impossible due to “technical reasons.”
Asian Games 2023 will pass in the Chinese city of Hangzhou from September 23 to October 8. They will be one of the qualifying competitions for the Olympic Games in Paris, which will take place in 2024 – from July 26 to August 11.
