Russian athletes are prohibited from traveling abroad without permission

RIA Novosti, citing several sources, reported that athletes, coaches and staff of state sports schools in St. Petersburg were prohibited from traveling outside the Russian Federation. According to sources, going abroad is possible only after agreement with the city sports committee.
The RIA publication states that three sources announced a ban on employees and students of budget sports schools traveling “to training camps and competitions” outside the country. It is also reported that the ban has even been extended to travel during the holiday period.
The heads of several sports schools confirmed to RIA that “there was a certain list of friendly countries to which it was possible to travel,” and “until recently, Turkey was included in it.”
“But then the committee said: ‘Forget about her,’” said one of the agency’s interlocutors.
Some time later, the agency published another news in which it reported that the head of the St. Petersburg Biathlon Federation Dmitry Vasiliev confirmed such a ban.
In a conversation with RIA, he stated that “there really is such an order, there is nothing supernatural here” and that “the government adopted this order in the spring.” According to Vasiliev, “it does not cause any difficulties for anyone,” because “it is of a notification nature.”
“It simply streamlines the process of movement of athletes,” Vasiliev added.
The agency’s interlocutor found it difficult to answer whether similar restrictions apply in other Russian regions.
