Russian Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko believes that the conditions created by the International Olympic Committee and international sports federations are such that virtually none of the Russian athletes will be able to qualify for the Olympics. However, he advises those Russian athletes who manage to do this to go.

“There are quite a few sports where such a possibility remains, and then the national federations and the Russian Olympic Committee will have to make a decision together. If the athletes have the opportunity, then they should probably go,” Mr. Chernyshenko told reporters (quoted from TASS).

In December 2023, the IOC Executive Committee decided that Russian and Belarusian athletes can only be admitted to the Paris Olympics in neutral status in individual competitions. Neutral status presupposes, in particular, the absence of public support for the Russian military operation on the territory of Ukraine and ties with the security forces of Russia and Belarus.

19 March 2024 IOC Executive Committee announced on the creation of a commission to verify each athlete from the Russian Federation and Belarus who will be admitted to the Games in a neutral status. According to the committee’s decision, a maximum of 54 athletes from Russia and 28 from Belarus will be able to participate in the competition. In case of victory, the athletes will be awarded to a specially prepared anthem without words and with a flag not related to the symbols of the countries.

In addition, the IOC banned Russians and Belarusians from participating in the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games. At the same time, contrary to the suspicions of some Russian sports officials, applicants for participation in the Games will not be required to write a written condemnation of the special operation, but they will be forced to sign an agreement with the “peaceful mission” of the structure.
