Russian and Ukrainian sambo wrestlers may not shake hands during the World Championships, which will be held in the Armenian capital Yerevan. The executive committee of the International Sambo Federation (FIAS) adopted a corresponding resolution.

According to media reports, during the competition, Articles 24.2 and 24.6 of the FIAS International Sambo Rules, which regulate athletes’ handshakes before and after bouts, will not be applied. In particular, sambists from the Russian and Ukrainian national teams will not shake hands. A similar decision applies to handshakes between Ukrainian and Belarusian athletes.

Previously, cases were recorded when Ukrainian athletes refused to shake hands with Russians. For example, in early November, in a group stage match of the Futsal Champions League, players from the Kyiv club “Hit” refused to shake hands with Russian Anton Sokolov from the Portuguese Sporting.

The Ukrainian athletes immediately received an answer – the Lisbon club players who followed Sokolov did not shake hands with them. After the game, Sporting coach Joao Matos led the team into the locker room without the traditional handshake with their opponents.
