Russian Ambassador Stepanov summoned to Canadian Foreign Ministry

Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov announced a call to the country’s Foreign Ministry, he said in the comments of RIA Novosti.

“They invite you at 15:30 (23:30 Moscow time),” he said.

Formerly Canadian newspaper The National Post reportedthat the ambassador was called in connection with the publications of the diplomatic mission on Twitter, which were regarded as homophobic. The country’s Foreign Ministry considered them “anti-LGBT propaganda”, which is an attack on Canadian values.

On November 25, the embassy published tweet with a crossed-out LGBT flag and the comment “It’s all about family. The family is a man and a woman and children. November 24 State Duma accepted a law on a complete ban in Russia on LGBT propaganda, pedophilia and gender reassignment in advertising, books, films and the media.

November 14 Russian Foreign Ministry banned entry into the country of 100 Canadian citizens directly involved in the “formation of an aggressive anti-Russian course.” The restrictions affected, in particular, the actors Jim Carrey and Katherine Winnick, the grandson of Nazi accomplice Stepan Bandera Stefan Bandera, as well as a number of journalists from CBC, Global News, The Globe and Mail, CTV and others.

Late October Canada expanded list of sanctions against Russian individuals and legal entities, including 35 individuals and six legal entities. The sanctions also affected, in particular, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Gazprom Viktor Zubkov, Minister of Energy Nikolai Shulginov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Gazprom Vitaly Markelov, head of the company’s investor relations department Anton Demchenko, official representative of Gazprom Sergey Kupriyanov, rector of the RANEPA Vladimir Mau.
