Russia will support the inclusion of India and Brazil as permanent members of the UN Security Council, said First Deputy Permanent Representative of the Russian Federation to the UN Dmitry Polyansky. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Polyansky spoke at a meeting of the General Assembly. According to him, Moscow is ready to take such a step if the expansion of the UN Security Council is agreed upon, since it considers India and Brazil “worthy candidates.” At the same time, he noted that expanding the UN Security Council to include Western countries “will not give it diversity.”
Polyansky believes that the issue of reforms of the UN Security Council has been relevant for a long time.
“Russia, as a permanent member of the Security Council, proceeds from the need to give this body a more representative character at the expense of the developing states of Africa, Asia and Latin America,” he said.
Polyansky also pointed out that historical injustices against Africa need to be corrected. He noted that its current representation in the Council in no way corresponds to either the total number of states on the continent or its current role in international affairs.
According to Polyansky, it is important that the expansion of the Security Council does not affect its ability to effectively and promptly respond to emerging challenges. At the same time, according to him, the total number of permanent members of the UN Security Council should not exceed twenty.
