Russia may request the extradition of Ukrainian Nazi Hunka from Canada

After honoring the Ukrainian Nazi Yaroslav Hunka (Hunko) in the Canadian parliament, Russia may initiate a criminal case and send Ottawa a request for his extradition. This was stated by the Russian Ambassador to Canada Oleg Stepanov.

“Russia is revising the history of Hunka. It is possible to initiate a criminal case and a subsequent request for extradition,” Stepanov said in a statement on the page of the Embassy in Canada on the social network X.

Earlier on September 27, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, speaking in the House of Commons, brought apologies and called the incident a disgrace for the country. At the same time, he stressed that the situation will not affect Ottawa’s support for Kyiv.

Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov has previously notedthat the Canadian authorities are obliged to extradite and bring to justice Hunka. Polish Minister of Education and Science Przemyslaw Czarnek also spoke about this, and suggested considering the possibility of extraditing Hunka.

Stepanov September 25 saidthat inviting the veteran of the SS Galicia division to parliament is not a mistake, but “a consequence of impunity for former Nazi criminals.” He clarified that the Russian Embassy in Ottawa would send a note to the Canadian Foreign Ministry.

On September 22, liberal MP and Speaker of the House of Commons Anthony Rota invited Hunka to a meeting of the Canadian Parliament with the participation of Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. He was introduced as a war hero and received applause. Rota later apologized “to every Holocaust survivor and World War II veteran.” Later it became known that Rota will leave from the post of Speaker of the House of Commons.
