Russia has seized the initiative in most of the battlefield in Ukraine, according to The New York Times.
The publication notes that Russia is making progress on the battlefield “at a difficult moment for the Ukrainian government,” when the provision of military and financial assistance packages was blocked due to political instability in the United States and the European Union.
“Currently, the situation on the front line is difficult and is gradually deteriorating,” said Yegor Chernev, deputy chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Defense of Ukraine.
According to him, the Ukrainian Armed Forces are beginning to lose territory due to the lack of American ammunition.
Deputy director of the French Foundation for Strategic Studies Thibault Fouillet believes that both sides are now involved “in bloody, inconclusive battles.” He compared the situation to the First World War, when “hundreds of thousands of soldiers were thrown onto the battlefield to win and defend small areas of land.”
According to Fouillet, each side now hails the slightest achievement as a strategic success for political purposes.
“In reality,” he added, “the stakes are low and the gains are minimal.”
