In Kiev, operatives detained the head of one of the Main Directorates of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine, who is suspected of involvement in the theft of 1.5 billion hryvnia (about 40 million US dollars) during the purchase of artillery shells for the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
According to the SBU, as well as the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine, this official in December last year entered into a contract with a special exporter for the purchase of shells and transferred the necessary funds to the company.
However, then the Defense Procurement Agency of the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine entered into a more profitable contract, which provided for the purchase of shells directly from the manufacturer with a significant reduction in cost. At the same time, the person involved in the case, despite these circumstances, extended the validity of the preliminary agreement, which was 30% more expensive.
Currently, work is underway to return the embezzled money to the budget of Ukraine. The perpetrator faces up to 15 years in prison.
