Russian President Vladimir Putin said that Russia has never separated Russians and Ukrainians, and called them one people. At the same time, according to him, anti-Russian sentiments on the territory of Ukraine are rooted in history.
“I want to tell you straight out how it happened. Everyone knows this: we have never made a difference between Russians and Ukrainians, between Russia and Ukraine,” the head of state said in a conversation with workers of Uralvagonzavod in Yekaterinburg (quote from “Interfax”).
According to Vladimir Putin, this approach is shared by the majority of Russian citizens. He added that any manifestations of extreme nationalism and Nazism must be fought.
He explained that after the Great Patriotic War, “Nazi elements who collaborated with Hitler” left the territory of Ukraine for the USA and Canada. According to him, after the collapse of the USSR, people who adhere to anti-Russian sentiments came to power in Ukraine.
In an interview with journalist Tucker Carlson, Vladimir Putin said that the word “Ukrainian” meant a person who lives on the outskirts of the state. Ukrainians, he said, did not represent a specific ethnic group.
