They will be tested using pendulums
The Federal Agency for Technical Regulation and Metrology has approved the methodology for testing helmets, in particular police helmets, for their ability to withstand impacts from various objects. In order to find out whether a helmet can protect against impacts, it will be hit with pendulums with different tips.
Helmets are tested for strength on impact stands. The main element of the test bench is a pendulum suspended on a crossbar. The helmet under test is put on a head model, which is fixed to the base of this pendulum. A striker is attached to its free end.
Helmets are tested for their ability to protect the head from two types of bladed weapons: impact-crushing and piercing-cutting. The first type includes, in particular, a flail, a club, a mace, a war hammer, nunchucks, etc. The second type includes various kinds of swords, sabers, daggers, checkers, machetes, halberds, etc.
To determine whether a helmet can protect against impact-crushing weapons, a spherical striker is used, with a steel hemisphere attached to its head. To determine resistance against piercing weapons, a sharp, conical tip is used.
During the test, the helmet is struck with a pendulum. In this case, the helmet is rotated in such a way as to make several blows on the front, back, dome and side parts. If the helmet has a visor and/or aventail (an element protecting the back of the head and neck), blows are applied to them as well. At the same time, they evaluate not only their integrity, but also how firmly they are attached and whether it is possible to raise the visor after impacts. The chin strap is also tested. To determine whether it is strong and how well it is attached to the helmet, a sinker is suspended from it.
Finally, the temperature regime: the “correct” helmet should withstand impacts at temperatures from -40 to 50 degrees Celsius. Only helmet models that have passed this type of testing will be adopted by security forces.
