Financial Times: Russia has gained an advantage in the electronic war with Ukraine
Russia is increasingly using electronic warfare (EW) systems to disrupt precision-guided munitions supplied by Ukraine from Western countries, including HIMARS missiles and Excalibur artillery shells. Moscow is also using its electronic warfare capabilities to simulate missile launches and unmanned aerial vehicles, confusing Ukraine’s air defense systems and determining their location, the Financial Times reports.
The lack of electronic warfare capabilities leaves Ukrainian troops vulnerable to artillery attacks, drone strikes and exploding unmanned aerial vehicles.
One Ukrainian soldier expressed dissatisfaction that his unit had no electronic warfare capabilities and was almost completely destroyed as a result of weeks of intense bombing on the eastern front, when Russian drones attacked them almost like mosquitoes.
“What kind of electronic warfare?… We had nothing. I don’t even want to remember those days in the trenches. Our guys died like flies,” a Ukrainian soldier shared his experience.
General Valeriy Zaluzhny, commander-in-chief of Ukraine’s armed forces, warned in November that electronic warfare is “the key to winning the drone war” and breaking the virtual stalemate on the front line.
