Maryana Lysenko, co-chair of Vladimir Putin’s election headquarters, said that more than 1.3 million signatures have currently been collected in support of the nomination of the current president. Ms. Lysenko expressed hope that this figure will increase.
“From December 30, volunteers began delivering the first collected documents to the central headquarters, where documents are checked, processed by the legal service, and volunteers count their number,” said Maryana Lysenko (quoted by TASS). She recalled that the collection of signatures started on December 23 and will last until January 31.
According to the current legislation, a self-nominated candidate in presidential elections must collect and submit to the Central Election Commission from 300 thousand to 315 thousand signatures of voters – no more than 7.5 thousand in each region. Signatures must be submitted to the CEC by the end of January. After this, the CEC must verify the signatures, review the registration documents and, within ten days, make a decision on whether to register the candidate for the elections or to refuse it.
The presidential elections will take place from March 15 to 17. In addition to Vladimir Putin, Vladislav Davankov (New People), Leonid Slutsky (LDPR), Nikolai Kharitonov (Communist Party of the Russian Federation), Sergei Baburin (Russian All-People’s Union), Andrei Bogdanov (Russian Freedom and Justice Party), are also vying for participation in the elections. Boris Nadezhdin (Civil Initiative), Sergei Malinkovich (Communists of Russia), Irina Sviridova (Democratic Party of Russia), bloggers Rada of Russians and Anatoly Batashev (both self-nominated).
