Russia expects the signing of an FTA agreement between the EAEU and Iran by the end of the year

The conclusion of a free trade zone (FTA) agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Tehran will open up new opportunities for Russia to expand trade and economic cooperation. Moscow expects that the agreement will be signed before the end of 2023. This was stated by Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin at a meeting with First Vice President of Iran Mohammad Mokhber.
In his welcoming speech, Mishustin emphasized the long-term friendship and partnership of the two countries, based on mutual respect and consideration of each other’s interests. Speaking about strengthening trade and economic cooperation, the head of the Cabinet noted that at the end of 2022, trade turnover between Russia and Iran amounted to a record 350 billion rubles.
The Prime Minister mentioned cooperation in the field of tourism, recalling that from August 1, Russia and Iran switched to a visa-free regime for tourist groups. Iran is also included in the list of countries whose citizens are issued a single electronic visa for business and tourist trips, as well as for participation in scientific, cultural, and sports events.
“We work closely with you within multilateral formats. For the first time, Iran is participating as a full member in the meeting of heads of government of the SCO. We welcome you. And of course, I would like to especially note the importance of the decision of the BRICS heads of state to invite Iran to join the union on January 1, 2024,” the prime minister added.
Mishustin also recalled the project for the construction of the Rasht-Astara railway as part of the international North-South transport corridor with Russian financial assistance. On May 17, the presidents of the countries, Vladimir Putin and Ebrahim Raisi, signed an intergovernmental agreement on cooperation to finance the design, construction and supply of goods and services for the creation of this railway. Russia plans to allocate $1.5 billion for the development of this corridor until 2030.
