The Russian government approved the proposal of the Foreign Ministry to denounce the agreement with the Czech Republic on the establishment of the country’s consulate general in Yekaterinburg, according to an order signed by Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin.

“Accept the proposal of the Russian Foreign Ministry to denounce the Agreement between the Government of the Russian Federation and the Government of the Czech Republic on the establishment of the Consulate General of the Czech Republic in Yekaterinburg dated November 5, 2001, concluded in the form of an exchange of notes,” the text of the document says. The Cabinet added that the Russian Foreign Ministry was instructed to notify the Czech side of the decision.

After the start of the military operation in Ukraine in February 2022, the Czech authorities decided to close two of their representative offices in the territory of the Russian Federation. At the same time, the Czech Cabinet of Ministers decided to revoke the permission to operate from two Russian consulates general in the republic – in Karlovy Vary and Brno.

On February 16, the Russian Foreign Ministry decided to expel four diplomats from the Austrian embassy in Moscow in response to the actions of the Vienna authorities. On February 2, the Austrian Foreign Ministry declared four Russian diplomats persona non grata. It was reported that embassy staff were being expelled from the country in connection with activities “incompatible with their diplomatic status.” What rules the employees of the diplomatic mission violated, the ministry did not specify.
