Russia can no longer be called a gas station country – Kommersant

Russian President Vladimir Putin believes that at the moment the country can no longer be called a “gas station.” According to him, mineral resources now account for only 2% of Russia’s GDP.
“And only 2%, I want to emphasize, only 2% was accounted for by mining. Now let someone say that Russia is a gas station, as they tried to say about it quite recently,” Mr. Putin said during the investment forum “Russia is Calling!”
The President noted that Russia’s GDP grew by 3.2% over ten months, which is already higher than before the sanctions. Growth by the end of the year is expected to be at least 3.5%.
For the first time, the American Republican senator and former US presidential candidate John McCain called Russia a gas station country after the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine in 2014. John McCain died on August 25, 2018.
On September 1, 2020, Mr. Putin recalled his words and said that Russia, overcoming the coronavirus pandemic, showed that it is not a “gas station country,” but a state with “pronounced new technological capabilities.” On November 3 of this year, the Russian President again used this thesis, noting the country’s ability to resist Western sanctions and move away from the status of a “gas station country.”
