Ambassador Stepanov: A request for the extradition of 98-year-old Ukrainian SS soldier Hunka has been sent to Canada
On December 19 last year, the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office submitted to the Canadian side a request for the extradition of 98-year-old Ukrainian nationalist from the SS “Galicia” Yaroslav Hunka (Hunko), who was applauded in parliament while President Vladimir Zelensky was there. This was announced by the Russian Ambassador in Ottawa Oleg Stepanov.
“In fact, Gunko himself admitted that he voluntarily joined the SS and, therefore, committed all these crimes in which the Galicia division was involved. That is, a Nazi lives here,” said the Russian diplomat.
He also questioned whether Canadian justice was even going to prosecute Hunki.
Stepanov clarified that there is no extradition treaty between Moscow and Ottawa, but there is a document on mutual legal assistance from 1997.
It is worth noting that previously the Canadian Ministry of Justice refused to comment on Russia’s request for the extradition of the Ukrainian SS man, explaining that such requests are confidential until a court decision.
