Russia announced the expulsion of four Austrian diplomats

“On February 16, the Austrian Ambassador to Moscow, W. Almhofer, was summoned to the Russian Foreign Ministry, who was strongly protested in connection with the provocative announcement by official Vienna of four employees of Russian foreign missions in the Republic of Austria “persona non grata”. <...> As a response, four employees of the Embassy of the Republic of Austria in the Russian Federation have been declared “persona non grata”. They must leave the country before the end of the day on February 23 this year. The ambassador was handed the corresponding note,” the statement said.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stressed that the decision to expel four Russian diplomats from Austria is “unfounded” and “causes serious damage to bilateral relations, which are already in crisis due to the actions of the Austrian side.”
The Austrian ambassador was also informed about the problems with obtaining visas for Russian official delegations traveling to Vienna for multilateral events. “This situation will also not remain without consequences,” the Foreign Ministry concluded.
2 February Austrian Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded from four Russian diplomats to leave the territory of the republic within a week. We are talking about two diplomats from the Russian Embassy in Austria and two members of the permanent mission of the Russian Federation to the UN in Vienna. Embassy staff were reportedly declared persona non grata for activities “inconsistent with their diplomatic status” and members of the mission for “actions inconsistent with the headquarters agreement”. It is not specified what actions the expelled diplomats took.
