Rules on handing over foreign passports have come into force in Russia

On December 11, new rules came into force in Russia, according to which a person whose travel outside the Russian Federation is temporarily restricted is required to surrender his foreign passport. RIA Novosti reports this with reference to a published document.
Reportedly, this must be done within 5 working days from the day the person was notified of the temporary restriction on leaving Russia.
The message states that a citizen who falls under this category must appear in person and hand over his international passport, which will be kept by the relevant authority until the expiration of the temporary travel restriction.
It is noted that such a step will “remove corruption risks and eliminate the possibility of abuse by officials.”
