The match “Rostov” – “Dynamo” ended the 16th round of the championship of Russia. The home team used the opportunity to reach third place with a 2-1 win and 32 points. Now Rostovites are three points ahead of CSKA and one behind Spartak.
In the 16th round there was a unique situation when all the leaders had serious difficulties with scoring points. What can I say, even if Zenit suffered their first defeat in the championship, and at home, where before the match with Akhmat they beat everyone in a row and scored 30 goals in seven meetings. Spartak hardly defended a draw in the confrontation with Sochi, and CSKA unexpectedly lost at home to Pari Nizhny Novgorod, having missed a seemingly sure opportunity to get close to the red-and-whites.
As a result, the third place staggered under the army team, which Rostov had a chance to take. However, the club from the banks of the Don also had to try very hard to realize it in the match against Dynamo. The blue-and-whites themselves could catch up with Rostov and CSKA, who had 29 points each, and strengthen their positions in the fight for medals. Moreover, they looked good in the last rounds and gave out a series of three victories in a row, scoring 12 goals.
In general, Rostovites and Muscovites met for the fourth time during this season. In the first round of the championship, they parted with the world – 1:1, and at the group stage of the Russian Cup, Valery Karpin’s team first won – 2:0, after which Slavisha Jokanovic’s wards took revenge – 3:1. So there was parity between the yellow-blue and white-blue.
In general, even now it was evident that the opponents are too familiar and it is difficult for them to surprise each other with something. Except that Dynamo had two forced and important line-up changes due to injuries to main goalkeeper Anton Shunin and central defender Roberto Fernandez. Theoretically, their absence could have influenced the result in favor of Rostov. But the hosts chose a cautious tactic, more like a closed away model, and did not really strain the updated center of defense of the guests with Nicolas Marichal. The Uruguayan, together with Saba Sazonov, tightly grabbed Nikolai Komlichenko’s Rostov pole and cut him off from the ball. Muscovites attacked more sharply and from time to time bothered goalkeeper Sergei Pesyakov with blows. True, they did not score enough for a goal in the first half. In fact, there were no obvious scoring chances before the break. Although if Fedor Smolov hadn’t made a mistake in the transfer to Denis Makarov during the two-on-one exit, it would most likely have become extremely dangerous at the Rostov goal.
In the second half, the match took place with the advantage of Dynamo, and Makarov twice came close to finally opening the scoring. In the second case, Pesyakov, who attracted all the balls to himself like a magnet, repelled a powerful blow with his face. The Rostovites seemed to be only doing what they were defending, but in the 66th minute they succeeded in a devastating counterattack, which grew out of the usual removal in the direction of Komlichenko. The striker won the martial arts against Marichal, assessed the situation and with a filigree pass brought Kirill Shchetinin to the goal, and he struck into the corner with a touch. Jokanovic immediately responded to the missed goal with a triple substitution. However, in an effort to recoup the guests missed another quick transition of Karpin’s team to someone else’s half of the field. And again, Komlichenko acted as a dispatcher, who now gave a pass to Danil Glebov, who was rushing into the penalty area. And the defensive midfielder of the hosts acted like a real striker and, having wound up Diego Laxalt, who was guarding him, put the ball into the net on horseback.
Konstantin Tyukavin, who left the bench, managed to return only one goal, and the match ended in a not entirely logical victory for Rostov – 2: 1. The southerners scored 32 points, dropped CSKA from third place and at the same time reduced the gap to Spartak to a minimum.
In addition to Dynamo, on the final day of the 16th round, two more Moscow teams played – Lokomotiv and Torpedo, which are at the bottom of the standings. The railway workers in Yekaterinburg saved themselves literally in the last seconds, finishing the match with Ural in a 2:2 draw. But, having avoided defeat, they could not improve their position and with 13 points hung on the 14th line. The Torpedo players were firmly bogged down in last place, and even lost to Krylya Sovetov in their Luzhniki Stadium – 0:2. They still have only six points to their credit.
