Rostekhnadzor has developed new rules for the protection of nuclear facilities

New rules for the physical protection of nuclear power plants and other nuclear facilities have been developed by Rostekhnadzor. On Tuesday, July 4, the draft order of the department was submitted for public discussion.

As Rostekhnadzor told MK, the rules for the physical protection of nuclear facilities were first developed in 1997, then they were changed and supplemented. A new edition was required to bring the standards in line with federal legislation and IAEA recommendations, developed taking into account modern realities.

The document deals with the protection of nuclear installations and storage facilities for nuclear materials not only during their use, but also during their construction, modernization, commissioning and decommissioning, as well as during transportation across Russia. The new edition applies to the protection of nuclear materials and installations during transportation by all modes of transport.

The current document describes only the safety rules for their transportation by road and rail.

In particular, the Russian experience in protecting the Zaporizhzhya NPP was taken into account: for the first time, the rules state that the protection strategy must provide for counteraction to unmanned aerial vehicles.

They also determine the need to protect the water area adjacent to nuclear facilities: near the stations, means of detecting everything that approaches them both on the water surface and under water should be placed.
