Rosstat recorded in 2023 an anti-record for the number of births in the Russian Federation since 1999

In 2023, 1.264 million children were born in Russia, according to preliminary data (.xlsx) Rosstat data. This is the lowest figure since 1999, when 1.214 million children were born and set an anti-record for the number of births in the modern history of the Russian Federation. The statistics did not take into account those born in the Donetsk and Lugansk People’s Republics, as well as the Kherson and Zaporozhye regions.
According to Rosstat, 3% fewer children were born in 2023 than in 2022, and 9.5% fewer than in 2021. The number of births per 1,000 people in 2023 was 8.7, which is also the lowest figure since 1999 (8.3), the service calculated.
According to Rosstat forecasts, from 2023 to 2027 the birth rate in Russia will decrease from 1244.5 thousand babies to 1140.4 thousand. The figure will begin to grow only in 2028. By the beginning of 2046, Rosstat expects, the country’s population will be 138 million people.
According to preliminary data from Rosstat, in 2023 the population of Russia decreased by 243 thousand people (0.17%) and as of January 1, 2024 it amounted to 146.204 million people. On January 1, 2023, the population was 146.447 million people – then the reduction over the year was twice as large and amounted to 533 thousand people.
