Rosstandart explained the decision to allow the installation of square license plates on the front of cars

Rosstandart, in response to a request from Kommersant, explained the amendments to GOST 50577-2018 that have come into force, allowing the installation of so-called square (type 1A) numbers on the front of cars with a non-standard place for attaching the state registration mark. About this decision “Kommersant” reported the day before, but there was still no explanation from the authorities.

“The amendment was due to repeated requests from citizens, organizations and public associations,” Rosstandart told Kommersant. “It is worth noting the particular relevance of this issue in connection with the emergence of a large number of foreign-made vehicles as part of ‘parallel’ imports. We are talking about a large assortment of cars, including business and premium classes.”

The department noted that amendments to GOST are made on the basis of a “motivated proposal” and sets of documents submitted to Rosstandart by the relevant technical committee for standardization. “A similar set was presented in full by TC No. 278 ”Road Safety” in accordance with the position of the Russian Ministry of Internal Affairs,” Rosstandart said.

In September, as Kommersant reported, representatives of the Russian Automobile Federation (RAF) applied to TC No. 278 and Rosstandart with a request to allow the installation of type 1A license plates in the front of the car. The organization pointed out the inconvenience experienced by owners of Japanese foreign cars and some Soviet cars. In September, TC No. 278 and Rosstandart opposed this idea, but after the article was published on October 21, the authorities’ position changed, but the reason could not be found out: Kommersant asked this question to Rosstandart, but they did not answer it directly. “Russian newspaper” with reference to her sources, she reported that the initiator of the amendments to GOST was the State Traffic Safety Inspectorate.
