Residents of St. Petersburg on Thursday, April 20, noticed a huge column of yellowish smoke in the vicinity of the Kirov Plant. Such emissions are popularly referred to as “fox tail”. It could have been formed on the territory of the JSC “MZ Petrostal” enterprise. As the press service of the North-Western Interregional Directorate of Rosprirodnadzor told a Kommersant correspondent, this organization has come to the attention of the supervisory authority more than once.
The federal service noted that the activity of the enterprise allows us to conclude that emissions are characteristic of nitrogen dioxide. Earlier, in the work of the Petrostal plant, excesses in emissions of this gas into the atmospheric air were already detected.
The agency is preparing a warning to the company in terms of compliance with mandatory standards for the control of emissions into the atmosphere and environmental protection requirements. The interlocutor explained that it is premature to talk about any specific sanctions at the moment.
As explained to Kommersant in the city department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations, there were no calls to the place of the rescue team from the territory of the Kirov Plant.
In August 2021 St. Petersburg prosecutor’s office established that orange-red smoke is formed when Petrostal uses open-hearth furnaces for the production of metal products. The Supervisory Authority came to the conclusion that the equipment designed to clean gases from pollutants does not provide proper neutralization of emissions, and is also operated in violation of the established requirements for the protection of atmospheric air.
More details – in the material “Kommersant” “Petrostal was obliged to remove the smoke screen”.
