Rosprirodnadzor named Norilsk the most polluting city in Russia in 2022

Norilsk topped the rating of air polluting cities in Russia in 2022 compiled by Rosprirodnadzor. This was reported by Interfax with reference to a report on the activities of the department for the past year.
According to Rosprirodnadzor, the volume of pollutant emissions in Norilsk in 2022 amounted to 1.8 million tons. This is 10.5% of the total emissions for the entire country. The top 10 also included:
- Cherepovets (270 thousand tons),
- Novokuznetsk (263 thousand tons),
- Lipetsk (262 thousand tons),
- urban-type settlement Reftinsky (225 thousand tons),
- Mezhdurechensk (198 thousand tons),
- Magnitogorsk (173 thousand tons),
- Vorkuta (168 thousand tons),
- Irkutsk (132 thousand tons),
- Ufa (132 thousand tons).
According to the report, the most polluting federal district was Siberian (5.8 million tons of pollutants). They are followed by the Urals (3.6 million tons) and the Volga Federal Districts (2.3 million tons).
The main sources of emissions in 2022 are mining activities (7.2 million tons of total emissions in Russia), manufacturing industries (3.6 million tons) and the provision of electricity, gas and steam (3.1 million tons) .
In December 2022, the government submitted to the State Duma a bill on a unified information system for the state of the environment. It is needed, among other things, to assess the effectiveness of state regulation, the volume of which in this area will only grow. Prior to this, projects rested on the fragmentation of data and methodologies for their measurement and confirmation, departmental interests and large business costs for automation.
