Rospotrebnadzor saw risks due to an increase in the incidence of influenza and coronavirus

The head of Rospotrebnadzor Anna Popova said that for the first time in the last three years in Russia there is a joint rise in the incidence of influenza and COVID-19. According to her, this is fraught with additional risks and an increase in the number of hospitalizations.

“Today, probably for the first time in the history of the last three years, we are seeing a combination of the rise of influenza and the rise of covid. This carries additional risks,” the head of the department said at the conference “Countering the New Coronavirus Infection and Other Infectious Diseases.”

The number of people sick and those who applied for ARVI has already exceeded 1 million people; the number of people sick with coronavirus is also growing, Anna Popova said. The number of hospitalized people—that is, the severity of the disease—is also increasing. At the same time, Anna Popova noted that the epidemiological situation with the incidence of measles and whooping cough has become stable, and also assured that strict sanitary measures are not required.

Anna Popova also warned that due to climate change, the boundaries of natural foci of infection are shifting and the range of carriers of dangerous diseases is expanding. Ebola and Marburg fevers are spreading to new territories in Africa. Almost 5 million cases of dengue fever have been reported in the Americas and almost half a million in Southeast Asia.

At the same time, the head of Rospotrebnadzor assured that modern genetic technologies make it possible to develop and begin production of tests for any new infection in 4-6 days.
