After the discovery of an anthrax infection in Chuvashia, where the disease is currently confirmed in three local residents, one of them was hospitalized during a trip to the Moscow region, Rospotrebnadzor distributed a memo on the prevention of this disease. As follows from the material published by the press services of the regional departments of the department, no cases of human infection from contact with another person have been recorded.
It is reported that human infection occurs through direct contact with sick cattle, when the infection enters the microtrauma of the outer integument – scratches, abrasions. This can be observed when caring for livestock or butchering carcasses. Infection can occur aerogenically – due to the inhalation of bacterial spores. Another way – alimentary, that is, food, is observed when meat products are consumed with insufficient heat treatment.
“Infection of a person from a person is not observed,” the Rospotrebnadzor points out.
To prevent the spread of the disease, it is recommended to wear a mask when cleaning rooms for livestock, working with skins. A necessary condition for prevention is the vaccination of animals, as well as workers – both veterinarians and other workers involved in slaughter, cutting carcasses, storing and transporting raw materials of animal origin. If you suspect that an animal has been infected, you should immediately contact a veterinarian, and those who have been in contact with a sick animal should be placed under medical supervision.
“Do not buy meat from private individuals in impromptu markets,” Rospotrebnadzor also advises.
In the case of anthrax infection in humans, the cutaneous form of the disease is most often observed (in 95% of cases). It is characterized by fever, ulcers appear on the skin. In the pulmonary form, shortness of breath, chest pain, pneumonia develops. In the intestinal form, vomiting, diarrhea are diagnosed.
“Anthrax is successfully used for treatment,” Rospotrebnadzor said. “Anthrax is treated only in a hospital setting.”
