Rospotrebnadzor: in 27 regions of Russia, 1% of pregnant women are infected with HIV

Rospotrebnadzor recorded the initial stage of the HIV epidemic in nine Russian regions. The third stage, in which 1% of pregnant women are infected, was found in 27 regions of the country. Vadim Pokrovsky, Head of the Specialized Research Department of Epidemiology and Prevention of AIDS, of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor announced this.

Mr. Pokrovsky explained that there are three stages of the HIV epidemic: initial, concentrated and generalized. The initial stage is isolated cases. A concentrated epidemic occurs when more than 5% of a vulnerable population is infected, including gay men, drug users and prisoners. The generalized stage of an HIV epidemic occurs when more than 1% of the population living in a certain area is infected with the immunodeficiency virus. And the indicator is the percentage of infection in pregnant women.

“Nine of our regions are initial ones, these are mostly small national republics, 48 ​​are concentrated, that is, at least 5% or even more drug users are infected with HIV there, and 27 (regions.— “b”) is a generalized stage,” said Mr. Pokrovsky at the Congress on Infectious Diseases (quoted from “RIA News”).

In November 2022, Vadim Pokrovsky reported that since the beginning of last year, the number of newly registered HIV patients in Russia amounted to 40 thousand, with a total number of 1.1 million people. However, the Ministry of Health reported that the number of people with HIV in Russia in 2022 amounted to more than 851 thousand.
