Rospotrebnadzor found no reason to be afraid of ticks allegedly carrying plague

There is no reason to be alarmed by reports of the discovery of three new types of ticks supposedly capable of carrying the plague. Such a statement was made on Monday, May 15, in Rospotrebnadzor.
As emphasized in the department, the allegations that ticks “can cause plague” and some other natural focal diseases cannot be considered substantiated.
Relevant studies have not been carried out, and bats on which new types of ticks were found are not carriers of the plague pathogen. In addition, not a single case of human infection with plague from gamasid mites is known.
Earlier, Anatoly Altshtein, professor at the Gamaleya National Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, expressed confidence that expect new diseases or even more epidemics is not worth it. He noted that preventive measures in the case of new types of ticks should be the same as before: proper clothing and footwear, anti-tick drugs.
Academician Gennady Onishchenko doubted that ticks could carry the plague. He pointed out that plague is based in natural fociand its main carrier is the flea.
