Rospotrebnadzor estimated Russia’s losses from coronavirus at $306 per person

The head of Rospotrebnadzor, Anna Popova, said that the per capita loss of the Russian economy due to the coronavirus pandemic amounted to $306 per person. According to her, against the backdrop of larger losses in other countries, it is clear that the Russian government has chosen the right strategy to deal with the pandemic.

“If we count from the figures known to us today, published in different countries, then on a per capita basis, the losses of the Russian economy amounted to $306 due to the pandemic, and in Germany this number is $4807, in Australia – $5760 per capita. The numbers are incomparable. This just shows that everything we did was absolutely right,” said Ms. Popova. “RIA News” at the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum.

Anna Popova recalled that in Russia and in other countries of the world there were different systems of measures to combat coronavirus. She noted that in Russia there were practically no lockdowns, unlike other countries of the world, as experts called it an ineffective measure against the virus.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared a coronavirus pandemic in March 2020, in May 2023 this status was canceled. During the pandemic, many countries declared near-complete lockdowns several times due to outbreaks, which had a bad effect on their economies. In Russia, the lockdown was not officially announced, however, in the spring of 2020, “non-working days” and a self-isolation regime were announced.
