The decision to extend Russia’s participation in the International Space Station (ISS) project after 2024 may be made in 2023, said Sergey Krikalev, director of Roscosmos for manned space programs. He expressed the hope that the state corporation will receive such permission, and suggested that Russia will send cosmonauts to the ISS until it creates its own space infrastructure.

“I hope we get permission to continue (participation in the program.— “b”) next year. <...> We are starting to think about developing and creating a new station, but we understand that this will not happen quickly. Therefore, apparently, we will continue to fly until we have a new infrastructure that will allow us to maintain the presence of a person, at least in low orbit, ”said Mr. Krikalev at a press conference on the upcoming launch of the Crew Dragon spacecraft (quote on TASS).

Mr. Krikalev recalled that Roscosmos had decided to continue flights until 2024. The state corporation is discussing with the government “extension of participation in the ISS program.” In his opinion, stopping space flights would have a negative impact on the program.

The life of the ISS, agreed by the participating countries, ends in 2024. The new head of Roskosmos Yuri Borisov earlier announced Russia’s withdrawal from the ISS project after 2024. At the same time, a decision can be made in 2025, and in 2028, and in 2030, explained at Roscosmos.
