Roskomnadzor in the first quarter of 2023 blocked 400,000 pirated sites, which is 40% more than in the first quarter of 2022. The press service of the department told Izvestia about this.
In particular, the number of films on blocked sites is growing. Analyst agency TelecomDaily predicts a 70% increase in pirated films by the end of 2023. The growth rate of pirated sites is growing as more new sites are opened than a year ago, Denis Kuskov, CEO of TelecomDaily, said.
A site with pirated content is blocked if its owner has not followed a court decision and removed content that violates copyright.
In addition to illegal content, Roskomnadzor is also fighting fake materials – since the start of the special operation, more than 172,000 sites have been blocked.
At the same time, Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation Dmitry Medvedev declaredthat welcomes the use of pirated content. “The more different content, the better. And preferably free of charge,” Medvedev concluded at the time.
In March 2022, Hollywood majors – Universal, Warner Bros., Disney, Sony and Paramount – stopped film distribution in Russia due to a military special operation in Ukraine. At the same time, Aleksey Voronkov, chairman of the Association of Cinema Owners, said in July 2022 that Disney, Sony and Paramount are looking for channels for parallel imports to Russia.
