Rosatom: IAEA is expected to take concrete steps to prevent APU strikes at ZNPP

From the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the Russian side expects concrete steps aimed at preventing strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) both on the Zaporozhye nuclear power plant and on the adjacent territory and critical supporting infrastructure. About it says in the message of Rosatom in the Telegram channel.

Today, June 23, Kaliningrad hosted another round of consultations between the Russian delegation headed by Rosatom Director General Alexei Likhachev and the IAEA. The head of Rostechnadzor Alexander Trembitsky, the head of the Main Directorate for the Protection of Objects of the Russian Guard Vladimir Mashevsky and others also took part in the meeting from the Russian side. In addition to the IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi, his deputies took part in the talks.

The press service of Rosatom stressed that the discussion focused on issues related to the nuclear safety of ZNPP. Grossi raised them at a briefing at the UN Security Council on May 30. The IAEA Director General spoke about his vision of the agency’s further actions “in connection with the theses formulated by him on this matter.”

“For its part, A.E. Likhachev and other speakers emphasized that we are now expecting specific steps from the IAEA Secretariat aimed at preventing attacks by the Armed Forces of Ukraine both on the Zaporizhzhya NPP and on the adjacent territory and critical supporting infrastructure,” the state corporation said in a statement.

At the same time, Rosatom added, at today’s meeting Likhachev told Grossi about the measures taken by the Russian side for the safe operation of the ZNPP, including its water supply after the destruction of the dam of the Kakhovskaya HPP “by the forces of the Armed Forces of Ukraine.” The conclusion of the Rosatom report states that contacts will be continued.

ZNPP has been under Russian control since the end of February 2022. Since then, the plant and the city of Energodar, where it is located, have been subjected to regular shelling by Ukraine. In early September last year, an IAEA mission arrived at ZNPP. The organization called for an end to the attacks on the station and the establishment of a safe zone around it.
