Robert Fico became Prime Minister of Slovakia

Slovak President Zuzana Caputova appointed a new government of the republic led by Prime Minister Robert Fico. The ceremony was broadcast by TA3 TV channel.
“The President of the Republic, Zuzana Caputova, appointed a new government of Slovakia led by Prime Minister Robert Fico,” said the head of the protocol department of the presidential administration.
Fico’s Direction – Social Democracy party won the parliamentary elections in Slovakia on September 30 with 23.31% of the votes. The turnout was 68.4%. Previously, Fico had already served as Prime Minister of the country from 2006–2010 and 2012–2018.
Western media called the politician “pro-Russian,” pointing to his position on Ukraine. Fico previously promised to stop military aid to Ukraine, he also criticized sanctions against Russia and threatened to veto Kyiv’s invitation to NATO.
In the Kremlin called the absurdity of accusing Fico of pro-Russian politics. “In fact, we are now faced with a situation where any politician on the European continent who is inclined to think about the sovereignty of his country, who defends the interests of his country, is immediately trying to be dubbed a pro-Russian politician,” said Russian Presidential Press Secretary Dmitry Peskov.
On October 5, Dennik N reported that Chaputova decided to postpone the transfer of a new package of military assistance to Kyiv after the parliamentary elections in the country. Military assistance was agreed upon during the government of Ludovit Odor. The publication notes that the Slovak Ministry of Defense considered the possibility of sending these weapons to Ukraine, but the country’s president intervened in the situation. She considered that such a decision would mean “disrespect for voters” and called for waiting for the formation of a new ruling coalition.
October 7 Politico citing a representative of the Slovak government reportedthat the outgoing government of Slovakia does not plan to send military aid to Ukraine after Fico’s victory in the past party.
