RKN plans to collect information about the geolocation of IP addresses from telecom operators

Starting in September, Roskomnadzor plans to collect information from telecom operators about the geolocation of the IP addresses they use. This is stated in the new amendments to the draft order of the service dated July 31, 2019 and on January 15 it was published on the portal for discussing draft regulations. The order states exactly what information the RKN should receive from operators.

It is noted that today Roskomnadzor is already receiving information about what communication means operators have installed, as well as what foreign communication lines they are connected to and what IP addresses are used.

The explanatory note to the document states that geolocation information is needed to quickly set up protection against DDoS attacks from other countries.

Commenting on this news, head of the Committee on Information Policy, Information Technologies and Communications Alexander Khinshtein remindedthat in the current conditions the country is subject to a huge number of attacks. He emphasized that DDoS attacks are one of the components of the information war against Russia, therefore the above-mentioned measures taken are forced.
