Reznikov: it was possible to bring down the “Dagger” thanks to the American Patriot system

On May 7, Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov tweeted that thanks to the American Patriot air defense system, a Russian Kinzhal missile was shot down. This became possible thanks to the support of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from international partners, Reznikov said in his message.
According to the Minister of Defense, previously Ukraine did not have the ability to shoot down Kh-47 hypersonic aeroballistic missiles launched by the Russian military. However, now the military of the Armed Forces of Ukraine has such an opportunity.
“The Patriot system, a powerful new air defense system of Ukraine, shot down a Russian Kh-47 hypersonic aeroballistic missile. Previously, we did not have the ability to destroy such targets, but with the support of our friends, the impossible becomes possible!” Reznikov wrote.
9-A-7660 “Dagger” (in a number of sources X-47M2 “Dagger”) is a Russian hypersonic aviation missile system. Hypersonic missiles 9-S-7760 (about 10 M) of the complex are capable of hitting both stationary objects and surface ships: aircraft carriers, cruisers, destroyers and frigates.
The principle of operation of the “Dagger” is to fly to its target at hypersonic speed, and then slow down and reach the target at a much lower speed for correction and maneuvering. Therefore, outdated Soviet air defense systems are not capable of shooting down such a missile, which did not happen before. In most cases, defeating such a target is possible only with the help of the Patriot PAC-3 air defense system with the PAC-3 MSE kinetic interceptor.
