Reuters: West does not propose new sanctions against Russia due to fears of low support at the UN

Western countries are not proposing new sanctions against Russia at the UN, as more countries refuse to publicly criticize Moscow. About it writes Reuters, citing diplomats and UN sources.

It is noted that the West is afraid of low support in the UN, so it is in no hurry to bring up new restrictive measures against Russia for discussion. This is also signaled by the increase in the number of abstentions in the voting, the agency specifies.

“It’s getting harder to find meaningful ways to punish Russia,” said UN director of the independent International Crisis Group Richard Gowan, referring to Russia’s protracted military action in Ukraine.

According to agency sources in diplomatic circles, in June the European Union even considered a plan to appoint a UN expert to investigate human rights violations in Russia. However, the idea had to be abandoned due to fears that almost half of the members of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva (consisting of 47 people) might oppose.

Earlier, most of the countries that are members of the General Assembly condemned the conduct of a special operation in Ukraine. On February 26, Russia vetoed a draft UN Security Council resolution calling for an end to hostilities in Ukraine. In early March, the resolution was nevertheless adopted: representatives of 141 countries voted “for”, 5 “against”, 35 abstained.

Later, the General Assembly adopted a resolution on the humanitarian situation in Ukraine. In addition to the requirement to withdraw troops from the territory of Ukraine, the resolution also mentioned the security of civilian and critical infrastructure. 140 delegations voted in favor of its provisions, five voted against, and another 38 abstained.

Also in early April, the General Assembly suspended Russia’s participation in the Human Rights Council. Such a move was supported by 93 states, 24 were against, and 58 abstained. Russia has decided to withdraw from the Council ahead of schedule.
