Return of residents to Shebekino suspended for a week – Kommersant

At an operational meeting in the government of the Belgorod Region, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov informedthat the return of residents to the city of Shebekino and the villages of Novaya Tavolzhanka and Arkhangelskoye was stopped for a week. In early June, people were evacuated from them to temporary accommodation centers (TAPs) against the backdrop of intense shelling from Ukraine.

“We must carefully monitor the operational situation and not allow the slightest risk to the life and health of people. We understand that everything is quite complicated. No one can give a 100% guarantee, but we will pause for a week. If the situation is calm, we will return to the return of residents from TAPs in a week, from Monday,” Mr. Gladkov said. the head of the region instructed his subordinates not to interfere with those who decided to return to the settlements on their own.

The mass departure of residents from the Shebekinsky urban district began at the end of May. During the heaviest shelling in the area, hundreds of shells fell daily, resulting in the destruction of homes and infrastructure. By mid-June, less than 3,000 people remained in the 40,000-strong city of Shebekino, the rest had gone to temporary accommodation centers or relatives.

At the end of the month, due to a decrease in the intensity of attacks, people started to come back in Shebekino and nearby settlements. At the same time, the authorities began restoration work. According to plans, the repair of roofs and windows in all residential buildings should be completed by August 1, and by the beginning of winter, all people will be able to return.

Saturday, July 8, authorities for two days suspended restoration work in Shebekino due to shelling. Work has now resumed.
