On Monday, April 8, the celestial spectacle of a solar eclipse will last more than five hours. The longest phase, when the Moon covers the Sun for almost 4.5 minutes, will be seen in Mexico. This information was reported by the press service of the Moscow Planetarium.
The total eclipse will also be visible from North America and some islands in the Pacific and Atlantic oceans. This astronomical phenomenon will not happen in Russia.
Astronomers said that at 21:17 Moscow time in northern Mexico there will be the highest phase of the eclipse, lasting 4 minutes 28 seconds. During the full phase, you can see the corona of the Sun surrounding the solar disk completely covered by the Moon, as well as stars and planets nearby.
The solar eclipse, including partial phases, will last from 18:42 to 23:52 Moscow time. On this day, the apparent diameter of the Moon will be 1.0566 times greater than the disk of the Sun due to its proximity to the Earth (353,321 km), which will allow the Moon to completely cover the Sun.
The partial solar eclipse will begin at 18:42 Moscow time in the central Pacific Ocean and end at 23:52 in the eastern Atlantic Ocean. These phases will be visible in North and Central America, as well as the east coast of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
Eclipses of the Sun and Moon occur once every six months, two weeks apart. Lunar eclipses occur on full moons, and solar eclipses occur on new moons. When the Earth, Sun and Moon line up, these amazing astronomical phenomena occur.
