Residents of South Korean island evacuated due to ‘threat of provocation’ by North Korea

Residents of the island of Yeonpyeongdo, under the control of South Korea, received an order for immediate evacuation due to possible provocation from the DPRK.

Local authorities announced a mass evacuation after the South Korean military received information about shots fired from North Korean territory towards the island.

In 2010, Yeonpyeongdo was subjected to artillery fire from the DPRK, which led to casualties.
