The mayor of Nova Kakhovka, Vladimir Leontiev, said that residents of the city, flooded as a result of the breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovka hydroelectric power station, began to return to their homes. According to him, the water from the basements of most houses in the coastal zone of the city was pumped out.

“In Nova Kakhovka, yes, residents are returning to their homes,” Mr. Leontiev said on the air of the TV channel RBC (quote from TASS). He added that the situation in Nova Kakhovka is much better than in the settlements downstream of the Dnieper.

According to Vladimir Leontiev, more than 700 residential buildings were flooded as a result of the breakthrough of the dam of the Kakhovskaya hydroelectric power station in the Novokakhovka urban district. “We have a huge responsibility to make the return safe,” the mayor said, adding that the authorities are working on social payments to residents of the city.

On June 6, as a result of the Kakhovskaya HPP dam break, an uncontrolled discharge of water occurred, which flooded the settlements on both sides of the Dnieper. At the time of the destruction of the HPP, the water in Novaya Kakhovka rose by 12 m. May 10 Vladimir Leontiev saidthat local authorities plan to return the city to “normal” life within a week.
