Residents blocked one of the central streets of Makhachkala due to a three-day blackout

Local residents blocked Magomed Gadzhiev Street in Makhachkala due to a three-day blackout. The Minister of Energy and Tariffs of Dagestan Marat Shikhaliev and representatives of the city administration left for the place, the administration of the republic reported.

Protesters blocked traffic on the street with wooden pallets. According to local residents, emergency services do not respond to their calls. “We have been sitting without electricity for three days, we are suffocating, and no one is doing anything,” one of the protesters says on a published RGVK “Dagestan” video.

The police arrived at the protest site. They call on the protesters to disperse and remove the fences. No arrests have been reported.

In the administration of Dagestan reportedthat the Minister of Energy and Tariffs of Dagestan Marat Shikhaliev, representatives of the mayor’s office of Makhachkala, as well as the leadership of PJSC “Rosseti-North Caucasus – Dagenergo” arrived at the protest site.

Magomed Gadzhiev Street starts from the square where the building of the government of Dagestan is located, and stretches to the intersection with another central street – Magomedtagirov.

Mass blackouts in Makhachkala have been happening since August 7th. Mayor of Makhachkala Yusup Umavov reported that due to the heat, four substations burned down during the day on August 8. He also suggested introducing a rolling blackout schedule to prevent serious accidents. Since the beginning of August, the temperature in Makhachkala has risen above + 40°C for several days in a row.
