Rescuers tell — Ivan Yankevich

Today we are finishing our section “Rescuers tell” an interview with Ivan Yankevich, a first-class rescuer of the search and rescue service of the Moscow Aviation Center

How did you get into the lifeguard profession? How old were you and what did you do before that (who did you study)?

— The day I decided to become a lifeguard, I remember very well. I was only 16 years old, then on TV I saw a story where they talked about the school “Young Rescuer”, and I was captured by the rescue craft. Without a moment’s hesitation, I went to the indicated address and signed up for classes, and later joined the ranks of volunteer rescuers-reservists. Two years later, I was already a certified specialist.

– What is the most difficult thing in your profession?

There are no easy jobs! There are always difficulties, especially in the matter of salvation. In my opinion, success lies in the cohesion of the team. Being able to interact with each other is not easy, but it is very important, especially when minutes count.

Tell us about a case from your practice.

We recently received a call. Worried residents of one of the apartment buildings in the Yuzhnoye Butovo district reported that a woman was sitting on the porch at the level of the second floor and seemed about to jump down.

Upon arrival at the scene, we put a ladder to the visor, began to climb up and at the same time talk to the woman. It turned out that she was not going to jump at all – she just had the idea to climb over the balcony railing onto the porch visor and sit on it.

After making sure that there was no threat to life, we suggested that the resident of the house go down and sit in a safer place, for example, on a bench. It was not necessary to persuade the woman – she easily agreed and thanked us for our attention and responsiveness. This once again proves that the profession of “rescuer” requires a huge amount of skills and knowledge, including psychological ones. Sometimes a well-timed word can save a life.

What do you do outside of work, what are your hobbies?

– Outside of work, I devote my life entirely to my wife and children. I take my sons to various clubs and competitions. Yes, and we ourselves often arrange family running competitions. I also have a favorite pastime – dismantling and repairing old equipment. I involve my children in this as well. I’m sure this skill will come in handy in life.
