The second regional tournament on the modern martial art of Japanese fencing with bamboo swords was held at the Nord Arena sports development center
A regional kendo championship took place in Arkhangelsk. 30 athletes from Arkhangelsk, Severodvinsk, Novodvinsk and Koryazhma took part in the tournament. The clubs of the universities of NArFU and SSMU also fought for the victory.
Despite the fact that the kendo club has existed in Arkhangelsk since 2012, such a tournament is held only for the second time. Thanks to the activity of the kendo club management, the tournament is becoming traditional, the geography is expanding and the number of its participants is growing. Kendo is not just a sport, it is a deep philosophy that traces its history back to traditional samurai sword techniques and aims to shape the personality and character of the athlete.
According to the results of the struggle in the team standings, the NArFU team took the first place. The participants of the second regional kendo championship were able not only to identify the best team and athlete, but also to attend seminars on kendo and naginata (Japanese long-handled edged weapons), gain experience from the masters and pass the exam, stressed the head of the kendo club in Arkhangelsk Artem Ivanov.
Despite the beginning of development in the 8th century, kendo gained popularity only in the second half of the 20th century. It was then that the International and European Kendo Federations were created. In Russia, kendo was recognized as an official sport quite recently – in 2013.
