Antarctica has the lowest sea ice extent on record (since 1979), reported at the Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute. According to the results of the summer Antarctic season (lasts from December to February), its area amounted to about 1.8 million square meters. km. The ice remaining after the summer melting was preserved mainly in the Weddell and Amundsen seas, in the other seas it remained only along the coast. Low levels of sea ice extent were also observed in February 2022 – 1.92 million square meters. km. Usually, by February, the area of ice in Antarctica is reduced to 3 million square meters. km.
According to AARI experts, this year the weather conditions in Antarctica were warmer than usual. Combined with strong winds, this contributed to the formation of huge ice-free areas.
