RBC: in Russia, the life of obsolete landfills will be extended by three years

The Government of the Russian Federation intends to extend until January 2026 the operation of obsolete municipal solid waste (MSW) landfills, which were put into operation before 2019 and do not have documentation. About this with reference to the text of the amendments sent to the State Duma informs RBC.

The authorities plan to extend the operation of landfills that were open before the start of the “garbage reform”, the newspaper notes. Waste at such landfills had to be placed before the beginning of 2023, since by this time modern landfills were expected to be built in the country. According to the State Duma Committee on Ecology, Natural Resources and Environmental Protection, in 21 constituent entities of the Russian Federation such plans have not been implemented, there is nowhere for waste to go.

How notes committee chairman Dmitry Kobylkin in his Telegram channel, the heads of a quarter of the regions fear a garbage collapse on New Year’s holidays. According to him, the most difficult situation has developed in the Omsk Region, Kamchatka, Sakhalin, Altai Territory, Novosibirsk Region and Krasnodar Territory.

“Regions note that there is no infrastructure. And the reasons are different for everyone: from lack of financial resources to insufficient work in this direction, ”he wrote.

As Marta Galicheva, a representative of Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko, explained to RBC, the regional authorities asked the Ministry of Natural Resources to extend the life of the landfills, the government supported the initiative, but there will be no new delays. According to her, the subjects are obliged to launch new facilities for the placement of MSW and fulfill the President’s order on 100% sorting of waste and a two-fold reduction in disposal by 2030.
