Ravil Maganov is a hereditary oilman, his father Ulfat Maganov stood at the origins of field geophysics in Tatarstan and, in fact, instilled in his son an interest in this area. Ravil Maganov was born in Almetievsk (Republic of Tatarstan) on September 25, 1954, in 1977 he graduated from the Gubkin Moscow Institute with a gold medal with a degree in mining engineer for technology and integrated mechanization of oil and gas field development. Immediately after graduation, he was assigned to the production association Tatneft in Almetyevsk.

“I started as an oil production operator, then worked as a foreman, senior oil field engineer, head of the oil field, and only then I was appointed chief engineer of NGDU Yamashneft of Tatneft Production Association. In other words, in my production career, I practically did not miss a single step, ”Ravil Maganov recalled.

Since 1988, he has successively held the positions of Chief Engineer, Deputy General Director and General Director of the Langepasneftegaz Production Association in Western Siberia (controlled by Tatneft).

In 1993, he went to work at the LUKOIL concern (the first private vertically integrated company in modern Russia), formed two years earlier. Supervised key issues related to the exploration and production of hydrocarbons. In 1994, he assumed the position of First Vice President, and in 2020, Chairman of the Board of Directors of LUKOIL. According to experts, Ravil Maganov took such a high post because of his professional indispensability and influence in the company, with which he literally grew together over the years. In a sense, as industry experts say, he, as a manager, was more involved in the daily production activities of LUKOIL than president and co-owner Vagit Alekperov.

According to the corporate legend, it was Ravil Maganov who came up with the name of the LUKOIL concern – according to the first letters of the names of the cities Langepas, Uray and Kogalym. “Vagit Alekperov liked it so much that he even gave Maganov a prize of 300 rubles,” wrote the Profile magazine.

The name of this person is not involved in serious scandals, although certain rumors are associated with him. At one time, the press called Ravil Maganov the main hardware opponent of the singer Alsou’s father, Ralif Safin, who in the summer of 2002 was forced to leave the company as vice president. And in 2009, the media discussed how Ravil Maganov transferred to his wife a million shares of the company (equivalent to 0.118% of the authorized capital) under an agreement on the division of joint property. Then his stake was reduced from 0.486% to 0.368%. The wife’s share was worth $44.3 million, Maganov’s own share was $134.9 million.

In 2010, his fortune was estimated at $ 230 million, the Maganov couple were among the benefactors who supported the Maly Theater. In 2011, Maganov took 88th place in the ranking of the highest paid top managers with a total annual income of 67.11 million rubles.

Ravil Maganov is an honored worker of the oil and gas industry of the Russian Federation. He has the title of “Honorary Oilman”. He was awarded four orders (including the Order of Alexander Nevsky) and five medals, thanks to the government of the Russian Federation.
