Yaroslav Yurchyshyn, first deputy chairman of the parliamentary committee on anti-corruption policy of Ukraine, called the US decision to provide the Ukrainian authorities with a list of necessary reforms to receive military assistance erroneous.
In an interview with NV radio, Mr. Yurchyshyn said: “Reform is our internal task. It may be related to IMF funding, the European integration plan or NATO membership. However, the defense of Ukraine is actually the defense of Western values.”
He noted that linking reforms to the provision of weapons is “very short-sighted” on the part of Ukraine’s partners, and such a connection is a “big challenge.”
On September 26, White House Deputy National Security Advisor Mike Pyle sent a letter listing the necessary reforms that must be implemented to provide military assistance to Ukraine. The letter was received by the Interagency Donor Coordination Platform and the Ukrainian authorities.
The list of reforms includes the work of supervisory boards of state-owned enterprises of Ukraine, anti-corruption bodies, including the National Anti-Corruption Bureau of Ukraine (NABU), the High Council of Justice and the judicial system as a whole. The letter also notes the need for reforms in the Ministry of Defense and other security agencies, including the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU).
