Johnson delivered a farewell speech on Downing Street, after which, together with his wife, he went to an audience with the Queen at her residence in Scotland, Balmoral Castle. According to the publication, the meeting took about 40 minutes.
“The Right Honorable Member of Parliament Boris Johnson this morning received an audience with the Queen and submitted his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury, which Her Majesty has graciously accepted,” Buckingham Palace released a statement after the meeting between Elizabeth II and Johnson.
Immediately after meeting with the former prime minister, the Queen is scheduled to have an audience with Liz Truss, who will be asked to form a new government, The Mirror reports.
On September 5, it became known that British Foreign Minister Truss won in the struggle for the post of prime minister of the kingdom and leader of the ruling Conservative Party following the results of an intra-party vote that ended on September 2. Truss received 81,326 rank-and-file votes, while her rival, former Finance Minister Rishi Sunak, received 60,399 votes.
The election of a new head of the party took place after Boris Johnson, due to a series of scandals, announced on July 7 that he had decided to resign.
