In the opening match of the World Cup (WCH) held the day before at the Al Bayt Stadium, Qatar lost Ecuador 0:2. Thus, the country interrupted the tradition, according to which the host countries achieve positive results at the start. Despite the dull start, Qatar can already record another record in its asset – the organization of this championship cost several times more than all the previous ones. According to Qatari officials, spending, including spending on the construction of sports infrastructure, has exceeded $200 billion. This figure does not include the cost of building a subway, an international airport, new roads and hotels. With them, according to experts, spending exceeds $220 billion.
For comparison, the previous record holders, Brazil and Russia, the costs of hosting the World Cup were estimated at $15 billion and $11.6 billion, respectively.
